MAX WASN’T MUCH OF A CAVE PERSON. He knew that before JJ picked their vacation destination. For some reason, he’d managed to convince himself that he would somehow be able to turn it around and have fun once he was in an actual cave. He’d been wrong.

“You don’t look like you’re having a good time,” Michael noted as he moved to stand next to his son. They were in a huge cavern, stalagmites hanging overhead and funky lights offsetting the scene. “I don’t think it’s so bad.”

Max adjusted his expression right away. “Did I look mad? Please tell me I didn’t look mad.”

Michael’s brow furrowed. “You looked bored, not mad. What’s the deal?”

Max held out his hands. “I don’t know. I just … really wish we could’ve talked JJ into Disney World. I thought for sure that’s where he would want to go. I still don’t understand why he picked this place.”

“He’s interested in caves. That’s a boy thing.”

“Yeah, but once you’ve seen one cave, you’ve seen them all.”

Michael smothered a chuckle. Sounds tended to carry in the cavern and he didn’t want to draw JJ’s attention to them because he was afraid of hurting the boy’s feelings. “It’s not the end of the world. You can plan another vacation.”

“I know.” Max’s upper lip curled. “It’s just so boring. If we were at Disney World, we would be having a ball on the Haunted Mansion ride and screaming our heads off while riding rollercoasters.”

“Maybe that doesn’t sound fun to JJ.”

“Rollercoasters are always fun.” Max was having none of it. “The only one who doesn’t think rollercoasters are fun is Ivy.”

“She does have a weak stomach,” Michael conceded. “As for this trip, it’s not about the rides, Max. This is a bonding trip for the family. JJ has never been able to enjoy anything like this.”

“I know.” Max made a face. “I want him to have good memories of this trip, though.”

Michael inclined his head to where JJ was standing with another kid, both of them animatedly talking as they gestured toward a bevy of things on the cave ceiling. “He looks like he’s having fun to me.”

“But how can he be having fun?” Max was honestly curious. “Yesterday he watched a kid turn into goo.”

Michael hesitated and then held out his hands. “That part is … unfortunate.”

“Unfortunate? I can think of a few more words to describe it than unfortunate. Horrifying is right on top of the list.”

It’s … hard to accept,” Michael agreed. “I don’t know what to tell you, son. You’re just going to have to sit back and wait for him to ask the questions I’m sure he’s got bubbling underneath the surface.”

“And when I can’t answer those questions?”

“Point him toward Ivy. This seems to be her area of expertise. She’s the one who gets to have magical powers. That means the tradeoff is that she has to answer questions about said magical powers. It only seems fair.”

“Word.” Max grinned as he bumped fists with his father, barely containing a sigh as he glanced around again.
